Information for Science and Research course
This course is intended for students of doctoral programmes in English at the CTU in Prague and is organized by the CTU Central Library.
BASIC INFORMATION:
- Target group: International students of doctoral study programmes at the CTU.
- The course consists of 6 independent modules:
Module 1: Work with Information Resources
Module 2: Intellectual Property and Academic Integrity
Module 3: Open Science - freely available scientific information
Module 4: Principles of Publishing Scientific Results
Module 5: Research Evaluation and Citation Databases
Module 6: Scientific Presentation
Completion of the individual modules: Successful passing of the tests.
- Certificate of Completion: Students will need to successfully complete ALL 6 modules.
Course is open for the whole Academic year 2024/2025 (October 2024 – August 2025)

Purpose: Completing all modules will help PhD. students gain the knowledge and skills needed throughout the entire cycle of communicating scientific information. From the initial research to the current state of the art. From gathering information from different information sources, to storing it, using it legally and ethically in your own work and creating an academic text, where and how to publish it, how to promote it and what methodologies are available for evaluating scholarly results (citation analysis).
Module 1
Module 1 Work with Information Resources
In this module we will help you gain the knowledge and skills you need to find the appropriate information resources for your academic texts (e.g. dissertations, scientific articles, research reports). You will learn where to look, how to search effectively, how to evaluate the information you find, and how to access the information resources you need using library services.
Objectives: Students will profit from having knowledge of electronic information resources, and ability to search effectively for relevant documents for studying and research.

Module 3
Module 3 Open Science
In this module we will help you to get basic information about the key topics of Open Science - Open Access publishing and Open Research Data.
Objectives: Students will gain an overview of Open Access publishing and research data issues and the basic knowledge to recognize predatory OA publishing practices.

Module 4
Module 4 Principles of Publishing Scientific Results
In this module we will help you gain the knowledge and skills you need to publish scientific articles. You will learn how select an appropriate journal, how to write your manuscript, what you must not forget. You will also learn how the whole editorial process works, including reviews, and how to communicate with the editorial team. You will learn about all the steps that your article goes through from submission to publication.
Objectives: Students will profit from having knowledge of the whole publication process and ability to write high quality scientific paper.

Module 5 Citation Databases for Research
Citation databases are the right tool to choose to find bibliometric content and provide citation counts for the documents they contain.
Objectives: Students will profit from having knowledge of the whole publication process and ability to write high quality scientific paper.
